Areola: We proved once again that we can compete with the major teams.

West Ham United’s unbeaten start to the 2023/24 season came to an end against Manchester City on Saturday, but Alphonse Areola and his colleagues will not be discouraged.

For once, the Hammers made their imprint against the Citizens, scoring first through James Ward-Prowse and remaining in the game until the final whistle.

After Jérémy Doku leveled the score at the opening of the second period, Bernardo Silva’s and Erling Haaland’s goals sealed a 3-1 away triumph.

The Hammers’ four-match unbeaten run has come to an end, but Areola can take heart from another solid performance, both collectively and individually, with the Frenchman producing a number of superb saves to deny Rben Dias, Rodri, and Haaland.

It means the Hammers’ four-match unbeaten sequence came to an end, although Areola could reflect on another positive display both collectively and individually, with the Frenchman producing a number of fine saves to deny Rúben Dias, Rodri and Haaland.

“I believe we did well,” Areola stated. “We demonstrated that we are good on the ball and solid at the back, and I believe we deserved a little more from the game.”

“We could have added one or two more points.” When playing against this type of team, you must be clinical and avoid making mistakes.

“We want to get back out there and do the same thing.” We’re here for that; we’re pleased to participate, and we’re happy to play in that manner because we’ve demonstrated that we can compete against big teams like that.

“It’s critical for the fans, the team, us, and our heads that we maintain our focus and confidence in order to earn points in future games.”

Areola has made an impression since being promoted to the Premier League starting lineup, assisting his team to victories over Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Luton Town, before thwarting the Citizens for much of a hot September afternoon in east London.

The No13 merely stated that he is delighted to be able to contribute to the team rather than revel in individual accolades.

“I’ve had some good games, but it’s always better when you win,” he continued.

“I’m just trying to give it my all in every game – I’m here for that, and I’ve worked my entire life for it, so I’m enjoying being here to help the team.” That’s my main goal: to have fun.”
The Hammers return to play on Thursday night against FK TSC Baka Topola in their UEFA Europa League opener – click here to get tickets – with Areola likely to change places with ukasz Fabiaski after starting the Club’s march to European glory in Prague last season.

Areola is ready to return the favor after receiving Fabiaski’s full support in the previous two European campaigns.

“I am a team player, and I always want what is best for the team,” he said. “We had a great season last year when we won the Conference League, so if everyone works hard and gives their all for the team, everyone will be rewarded.”

“I’ll push him, wish him luck, and try to prepare him well for his games, just like he did for me.”

“We’re here for the team, but we’re also here for each other, so let’s compete and try to win another trophy together.”
