NFL: Doug Pederson leaves Philadelphia Eagles as coach three years after team wins Super Bowl championship
three years after the Philadelphia Eagles’ lone Super Bowl victory, Doug Pederson was let go; Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie talks on the team’s need to start a “new chapter” after the team won four games in the 2020 NFL season.

After joining the team in 2016, he has a 42-37-1 overall record in five seasons.

The Eagles finished 9-7 in both of their postseason appearances after winning the Super Bowl in 2017. However, they only managed four victories in 2020.

“It has been an absolute honor serving as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles,” said Pederson in a statement. Even though it is bittersweet to leave, I will always remember my time spent here with gratitude and respect.

“I am incredibly proud of what we accomplished together, even though I am disappointed that this chapter of my career has come to an end,” he continued.

“Through all the ups and downs, one thing remained constant about our team – an unwavering commitment to battle through adversity and to achieve our goals, not as individuals but as a collective unit.”

In a statement, Eagles CEO and chairman Jeffrey Lurie stated, “I have been reflecting on the previous few weeks and planning for the future. We’re all rather unhappy with how our season unfolded and are eager to make things right—not just for the upcoming season, but also for the franchise’s long-term prospects.

“I got the chance to meet down with Coach Doug Pederson and talk about what that shared vision would entail going ahead. I think it would be wise for us both to split ways after giving these talks some thought.

“I’ve known Doug and his family for almost 20 years, and I will always consider them to be family. I hold great admiration for him and all that we have managed to achieve in the last five seasons.

“Everyone in the organization is aware of the kind of guy and coach he is, and they also know how important he is to the City of Philadelphia and to all of us individually. As a Super Bowl-winning head coach, we all look forward to the day he is enshrined into the Eagles Hall of Fame, and we know he will be successful with the club he coaches next.

But I have a duty to act in this organization’s best interests as its leader, therefore I must all of us as we turn the page and look forward to the future.
