Coach Mike McDaniel of the Dolphins is “very happy” with the RB corps despite not getting Dalvin Cook.
Dalvin Cook signed a contract with the rival New York Jets, thus the Miami Dolphins missed out on getting him. However, head coach Mike McDaniel is happy with the group of running backs he already has.
The official transcript from the team stated, “I’m very happy with our running back group,” on Wednesday. “Since camp began, these guys—who I really feel are talented—have made tremendous progress. I’m pretty excited about the running back group overall. Really, other from what’s going on today, I haven’t really given other teams’ deals much thought. It’s practice day today. August 16th. Additionally, I’m excited to play against this unit and am thrilled with the group we’ll be facing off against.”
The Dolphins added third-round speedster De’Von Achane and re-signed Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr., Salvon Ahmed, and Myles Gaskin, the quartet from last year’s backfield.
Even though they brought back their top two choices, Cook started to associate Miami with Miami. But it always appeared to be a high-end item. A player of Cook’s calibre would be welcomed by the Dolphins, but they wouldn’t spend a lot of money on him. According to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, the club’s negotiations with Cook did not yield a contract worth anything near the $8.6 million for a single season that he was offered by the Jets.
Prior to acquiring Wilson halfway through the previous season, Miami’s rushing offence had trouble in the early going. Early in the season, Wilson and Mostert—who led the Dolphins with 891 yards in 16 games the previous season—are expected to split carries. Achane might steal carries as the season goes on and should start the season as a pass-catcher.
It makes logical that the Dolphins declined the Jets’ offer for Cook, especially with the three players healthy. But now, Miami has to play the resident of South Florida twice this season. The first meeting will place at MetLife Stadium on Friday, Nov. 24.
