Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy will return despite the team’s shocking playoff exit.

The NFL clubs looking for a new head coach will not see the Dallas Cowboys join them.

In spite of the club’s shocking 48-32 playoff defeat to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the team has chosen to keep Mike McCarthy on staff.

The news was announced by general manager and team owner Jerry Jones in a statement that was made available on Wednesday evening.

“I think Mike McCarthy will be our finest head coach going forward since this club is really near and capable of reaching our ultimate goals. Maintaining the team’s advancement under Mike’s direction as our head coach has several advantages “added Jones. In particular, Mike’s style of guiding the team has contributed to several levels of success this season.

“Mike has the greatest regular season winning percentage of any Cowboys head coach in history, and we will work together to leverage that to help us accomplish our postseason objectives. Undoubtedly, Mike’s career has shown excellent post-season success, and we are quite certain that it can continue.”

With an NFC East division victory under their belt, an NFL-best 8-0 home record, and the most prolific offense in the league, this was supposed to be the year the Cowboys ended their postseason misery.

However, the Cowboys’ old playoff demons reared their head as they trailed the seventh-seeded Packers 27-0 at halftime and were overpowered by them on both ends of the field. The No. 2 playoff seed losing to the seventh-seeded club was a first for postseason history.

Over the course of four seasons, McCarthy has guided the Cowboys to a 42-25 record and two division titles, but he is only 1-3 in the postseason.

McCarthy’s track record of playoff success in Green Bay, which includes nine postseason appearances and one Super Bowl championship in 13 seasons, may have been a major factor in Jones’ hiring of McCarthy in 2020.

The Cowboys, despite winning the Super Bowl in 1995, haven’t advanced to the NFC championship game despite their excellence in the regular season.
