The Dallas Cowboys’ Acquisition of Trey Lance Is Directly Related to Dak Prescott
We all know why the Dallas Cowboys got Trey Lance, so Jerry Jones can minimize it all he wants.
Jones outlined the rationale for the Cowboys’ surprise acquisition of Lance, a former No. 3 overall selection, only hours after they had acquired Dak Prescott, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.
Before Saturday’s preseason game against the Las Vegas Raides, Jones stated, “Didn’t cross my mind, period, about an impact here regarding Dak.” “We’re going to do all we can to help this squad, as I know Dak wants to. The reality is that we have been attempting to bring in young people of the highest caliber, but the chance has never seemed to present itself. Since we’ve started drafting, we’ve tried to do what we achieved today with this deal nearly every draft.”
The point is, though, that Prescott is involved. Prescott just had his worst season as a professional, throwing a league-high 15 interceptions in just 12 games, thus it’s no wonder that the move has been made.
As the Cowboys prepare to start Prescott for his seventh season as their starting quarterback, it is obvious that the team has hit its limit. Dallas boasts a strong squad, but despite Prescott’s leadership qualities and steady output, they have never made it past the divisional round of the playoffs.
It is pretty clear that Dallas will not sign Prescott to a contract extension if the Cowboys fail to make it deep into the playoffs—an NFC Championship Game appearance would be the minimum—against.
Although Prescott’s contract expires after the 2024 season and the Cowboys have made all the proper noises about wanting to extend it, there’s a reason why negotiations to sign the 30-year-old quarterback have stalled.
It’s true that in his two years in the NFL, Lance has demonstrated very little and is still raw and unpolished. It’s also true that, despite attending an FCS school and missing the whole 2020 season due to the COVID-19 epidemic, his sheer potential earned him a No. 3 overall draft pick.
With more time and repetitions, Lance has the potential to become a successful quarterback for the team. Recall that he started the season as a starting quarterback for a Super Bowl contender before suffering an injury that ended his season the previous year. Jimmy Garoppolo, who had previously guided San Francisco to a Super Bowl and NFC Championship Game appearance in two of the previous three seasons, was passed up by the Niners in favor of Lance.
He provides us with the chance to pursue our lifelong goals. Having a young, potential quarterback who could simply be in the room with Dak would be fantastic, according to Jones. “This gives Trey what he had in San Francisco, and because Dak Prescott is in it, he [joins] what I consider to be one of the best quarterback rooms in the game.” I think Dak Prescott’s best attribute is his ability to apply what he learns in the classroom to real-world situations. We thus had a pretty clear idea that he would be entering this scenario with Dak.
