Update on Deshaun Watson’s Injury: According to recent reports, the Browns quarterback may miss weeks of play.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson’s playing status remains unclear after he left Sunday’s game at Indianapolis in the first quarter in his return from a two-game absence with a right shoulder injury.

Coach Kevin Stefanski offered few details Monday on Watson, who strained the rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder on Sept. 24 against Tennessee. He sat out the following week against Baltimore and again on Oct. 15 against San Francisco.

Stefanski did not address a specific question about whether Watson underwent more medical tests, saying the team was awaiting results

on a bunch of guys.

Stefanski was also vague on whether the team would consider putting Watson on injured reserve, giving him four weeks to heal.

Stefanski restated the team’s customary response regarding Watson’s injury, which is “day to day,” following a few weeks of conflicting signals.
After being listed as questionable, Watson returned to practice last week and got the starting nod against the Colts.
However, he only saw 12 plays on the field before leaving due to a knock that occurred when he was throwing an incompletion and struck his head on the ground.
Although Watson was cleared to play after passing the NFL concussion protocol, Stefanski decided to bench him in favor of backup QB P.J. Walker, who helped the Browns win 39–38.
Following the game, Stefanski declared that he had chosen to “protect our franchise quarterback” and that Watson would start against Seattle on Sunday.

On Monday, Stefanski restated his belief that Watson shouldn’t return to the game on a Zoom call with media.

When they played the replay, I saw it on the big screen. I simply thought that shielding him was the appropriate thing to do for the team. My constant concern will be for our players, particularly the quarterback.

I just believed that keeping him out of that game was the correct thing to do at that particular time.

In his two seasons with Cleveland, Watson has only made nine starts despite agreeing to a $230 million contract with the Browns. Due to his violation of the NFL’s personal conduct rules, he received an 11-game suspension last season.

After being struck by Indianapolis defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo in the Browns’ Week 7 victory over the Colts, Deshaun Watson left the game.

At the beginning of the second half, CBS Sports sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala stated that even though Watson passed a concussion test, the Browns chose to be cautious and he did not return to the game.

Following the team’s 39-38 victory on Sunday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that Watson, assuming he can suit up, will start the team’s game against the Seattle Seahawks the following week.

Stefanski was questioned on Monday about if the Browns would think about benching Watson due to injury. The quarterback is day-to-day, he retorted. According to Stefanski, the Browns are awaiting the findings of an MRI.

Even after passing the concussion protocol, Watson still seemed to be affected by the blow. After being hit, he grasped his right shoulder, found it difficult to raise his right arm, and decided not to try to pass on the sideline.

Following his injury on the play, Watson laid on the ground for a little while before being helped off the field by the team’s medical personnel. He then entered the medical tent belonging to the squad.

Watson had been questionable with a shoulder injury heading into the Week 7 game. He left the game with just over three minutes left in the first quarter with the Browns trailing the Colts, 14-7.

Cleveland”s starting quarterback was just 1 of 5 for five yards with an interception up to that point.

PJ Walker, who started in placed of an injured Watson during last week”s win over the 49ers, replaced Watson in the starting lineup.

Walker led the Browns on consecutive scoring drives upon entering the game despite not completing his lone pass attempt.

The first score — a short touchdown run by Kareem Hunt — was set up by Myles Garrett”s strip-sack of Gardner Minshew. Cleveland”s next drive ended with a field goal after the Browns” special teams blocked a field goal attempt.

Walker finished the game with 178 yards on 15 of 32 passing. Despite his underwhelming numbers, the Browns edged the Colts, 39-38, while improving to 4-2 on the season.

The Browns” offense suffered another blow on Sunday when quarterback Deshaun Watson left Cleveland”s Week 7 contest with the Colts.

Watson, who only recently returned to action after missing Weeks 5 and 6 with a right shoulder injury, found himself on the mend once more after taking a shot from EDGE Dayo Odeyingbo while attempting a throw late in the first quarter of Sunday”s affair.

Although Odeyingbo avoided leveling Watson with a particularly crunching strike, Watson slammed the back of his head into the turf. He laid sprawled on the grass for some time before being assisted to the sideline.

Here”s the latest on Watson”s status in Week 8 and beyond.

Watson was sidelined after appearing to bump his head on the turf following his collision with Odeyingbo. However, he was cleared of a concussion soon after, per Cleveland.com”s Mary Kay Cabot.

That didn”t stop the Browns from playing backup P.J. Walker, however. Watson”s understudy retained his spot under center in game”s final three quarters and fared well, even leading Cleveland down the field for a 12-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a game-winning touchdown in the game”s final moments.

Stefanski explained his decision to play Walker — who completed 15-of-32 passes for 178 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception on Sunday — as such:

I just did not want to put [Watson] back out there. I wanted to protect our franchise quarterback. That was my decision.

Watson expressed that he got it.

I’m a competitor, so of course I want to compete.

stated Watson.

I want to go out there and do everything I can to support the team. The team’s best interests guided the choice.

Before departing the Week 7 match, Watson completed only one of his five throw attempts for five yards and an interception.

Stefanski reiterated his belief in his starter in spite of his decision. Whether Watson will be able to take part in practices this week is still up in the air. But what about Cleveland’s matchup with Seattle in Week 8? He will be present, as the organization declined to designate him as injured after the game.

In Seattle, Stefanski declared, “He’s our starter.”
