ESSENDON FOOTY BOSS TO LEAVE AFTER AFL HOUSE REPORTED DISPUTES AND INTEREST

After Josh Mahoney declared his decision to step down, Essendon will be looking for a new executive GM of football at the end of the season.

After three years with the Bombers, Mahoney will leave at the end of the 2023 season.

The accomplished administrator was previously believed to have a toxic relationship with long-time list manager Adrian Dodoro, which Caroline Wilson described as a “ticking time bomb” earlier this year.

Mahoney’s name has also been linked to the position of AFL GM of football, which will report to whoever the league picks as the executive general manager.

Mahoney stated in a club statement that he seeks a new challenge.

“This has been a difficult decision to come to but one that I am confident is the right for all involved,” he stated.

We are in the first year of a new build, with a new coach, and as EGM- Football, you must be 100% committed to the task to see it through.

“Over the last month, I’ve been reflecting and realized that I need a new challenge, and that now is the right time to make that move.”

“During my time at the Club, we’ve made a lot of changes to the football department, including the formation of our first-ever AFLW team and program.” I am certain that the Club’s future looks bright with Brad and Natalie as senior coaches and the seasoned team we have recruited around them. I am proud of my role in helping to develop a world-class football atmosphere at Essendon, and there are exciting days ahead.

“In total, I’ve spent more than 25 years at the AFL club level as a player, coach, and GM of Football for a decade at both Essendon and Melbourne.” It’s been an honor, and I’m looking forward to what comes next.”

Essendon CEO Craig Vozzo, in his first season in charge, lauded Mahoney’s efforts.

“Josh has done an exceptional job, particularly in guiding the Club through the significant changes to our Football Program that were implemented at the end of last season.” He has also played an important role in the formation of our AFLW club and program, which we are all proud of and enthusiastic about moving forward,” Vozzo said.

“I’d like to thank Josh for all of his efforts and for the Club-first attitude he has clearly demonstrated in achieving this position.” He is well-positioned for the next challenge, and we wish him and his family the best of luck in the future.

The Bombers did not specify when the future head of the football department would be chosen.
