‘As soon as’ – Coventry City manager admits to losing star player
The 23-year-old has come close but has failed to make an impact for the Sky Blues this season.
Mark Robins admits that if Callum O’Hare starts finding the back of the goal on a regular basis, Coventry City will struggle to keep him.
The 23-year-old Sky Blues favourite already has a reputation for being one of the most hardworking and dangerous attacking midfielders in the Championship, which means he’s also the most fouled player.
He has numerous assists this season and last, but he has yet to add goals to his game on a consistent basis.
He only had three last season in his first season in the second tier, after scoring four for the club in League One the year before.
Former Aston Villa trainee O’Hare has had chances and come close this season, but Robins is convinced the goals will arrive sooner or later.
The manager, on the other hand, has mixed feelings about it, knowing that if he starts finding the back of the goal, he’ll be a sought man, with the possibility of City losing him.
“He can finish, and that’s where he’s frustrated,” said Robins of the athlete, who is in the second year of a three-year deal with the CBS Arena.
“He just needs to be calm and develop a process for himself, which we have looked at and discussed without giving him any more concerns.”
Because the worst thing you can do is concentrate on something and think, ‘okay, I’m not good at this or I need to improve on this, and if I get my first objective…’
“It’s a process, and it’s just getting out of one mindset and into another.”
“But as soon as he does that we know we’re going to lose him, don’t we?”
“So I’m saying to him, just miss occasionally,” he added, laughing. Get one or two and set objectives for others…
“But he’s just a great kid, a really good kid who’s also great to work with, but only at Coventry!”
“No-one else will enjoy working with him.”
