Everton midfielder Andre Gomes’ deadline-day transfer to Fenerbahce fell through because the Turkish club did not see him as a significant improvement.
According to Sporx, despite the necessity for a number six in the squad, the decision was made not to recruit the Everton man.
After returning to Everton after a loan spell at Lille this summer, Gomes was linked with a late move to Turkey.
A return there did not materialize, nor did a move elsewhere, leaving him looking to Turkey, whose transfer deadline was yesterday, in the aim of getting out of Goodison Park.
Fenerbahce were thought to be interested in him as they sought a midfielder for their squad, but a deal fell through, as Sporx explains.
They claim that after spending about €50 million this summer, Fenerbahce executives were eager to obtain a’very high-quality name’ for the number six position if possible.
Gomes was’recommended to the club,’ but he was’vetoed’ because it was deemed he would not significantly enhance the team enough to justify the expense.
Fenerbahce ‘took a step back’ rather than signing him because the transfer sums involved were too expensive for their liking and they did not think it a good deal.
Meanwhile, journalist Yaz Sabuncuolu adds that Gomes mediator Emmanuel Adewole has lately left Istanbul after being in the city to broker a deal.
He claims he was ‘authorized by Everton’ to meet with Fenerbahce and discuss a prospective deal for the Portuguese midfielder, but those conversations appear to have failed.
It’s worth noting that Adewole has no direct ties to Gomes, who is represented by the Wasserman group of agents.
There is a chance they authorized him to operate on their behalf, but Sabuncuolu appears to be implying he was working for Everton rather than the player.
In any case, it appears he failed to persuade Fenerbahce to spend their money, and Gomes will remain at Goodison Park until at least January.
