Edson Alvarez is overjoyed that an eventful summer transfer window led him to West Ham.
In mid-August, the Mexican international became the Irons’ first acquisition of the summer window, joining from Ajax in a £32 million transfer as David Moyes began life without Declan Rice.
It turned out to be the 25-year-old’s final few months in the Dutch city, four years after relocating there from Club America.
Chelsea sought to sign the midfielder in January but had a late £43 million bid rejected, while Borussia Dortmund was also interested.
Alvarez, on the other hand, has made a good start at West Ham. Excellent against Luton Town before the international break, the Mexican already appears to be a significant player under a boss who is not known for throwing new arrivals in at the deep end.
Concerning Dortmund’s interest, Alvarez stated on the Mexican National Team’s YouTube channel: “There was a little bit on the Dortmund side that was a fairly specific option, and, in the end, it couldn’t be, but there was a lot of rapprochements on their part, including visits to Amsterdam to meet my family.”
“I’ve always believed that everything happens for a purpose, that everything is wonderful and good. Now I am overjoyed with the decision I made to join West Ham, a team that has taught me a lot in just one month.
“When you reach the best league in the world, the truth is that it’s something inexplicable.”

West Ham purchased Edson Alvarez from Ajax in the summer for about £34 million, which appears to be a steal.

And he admits that his Hammers move was a whirlwind:

I have no doubts that Alvarez will go on to become a Hammers hero.
The Mexican is a fierce tackler who plays with genuine passion, commitment, and heart – three qualities that West Ham fans admire in their players.
He has already integrated easily into the Hammers squad, and he will play an important part this season if we are to achieve success on all fronts.
What a bargain he has proven to be for only £34 million – undoubtedly one of the best signings in the Premier League this summer.
Let’s hope Edson Alvarez continues to improve for West Ham over the next three years, and that the £34 million we paid for him turns out to be the steal of the century.
