Former Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic, and Fleetwood Town player retires at the age of 37.
Charlie Mulgrew, a former Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic, and Fleetwood Town player, has declared his retirement, according to Stv News.
At the age of 37, the Scotsman has decided to end his playing career.
Mulgrew, who has 44 caps for Scotland, parted ways with Dundee United at the end of last season.
He has now decided to hang up his boots after evaluating his options as a free agent for the past few months.
Mulgrew, a former Blackburn and Wigan player, played with Blackburn from 2016 to 2021, making 109 appearances and scoring 27 goals during his spell at Ewood Park.
The versatile defender scored 14 goals in his second season at the club under previous manager Tony Mowbray to help the Lancashire side achieve promotion from League One, and he then adapted well to the step up to the Championship.
Mulgrew fell out of favor during his final two years at Rovers and was loaned out to Wigan for the first time in 2019. During his stay at the DW Stadium, he appeared 13 times.
Fleetwood Town then came calling on a temporary basis 12 months later and he made 23 outings for the Cod Army in the third tier, finding the net once. The Glasgow-born man, who also spent time at Celtic, Wolves, Southend United and Aberdeen, departed Blackburn when his contract expired a couple of years ago.
Dundee United subsequently snapped him up for nothing and he moved back up to Scotland after five years below the border in England. He couldn’t prevent the Terrors from relegation to the Scottish Championship though and left earlier this summer as he now announces his retirement.
