West Ham: Jesse Lingard update

The midfielder previously played for the London Stadium on loan…

West Ham United has been a surprise package in the Premier League this season, going unbeaten in their first four games and defeating both Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion along the way.

The Hammers deserve a lot of credit for their performances on the field, but it’s worth noting how impressive they were in the summer transfer window, using the projected £105 million gain from the sale of Declan Rice extremely smartly.

Even though the transfer market has closed, West Ham could still benefit from one more addition, with one attacking midfielder apparently being evaluated by the London club.

What is the most recent West Ham transfer news?
West Ham spent the Rice money wisely, bringing in five reinforcements, including Ajax star Mohammed Kudus, who scored 18 goals and assisted on another seven for the Dutch giants last season.

Meanwhile, James Ward-Prowse has made a strong start to life in Claret and Blue, scoring once and assisting three times in four outings.

Ensuring that his team has the depth to compete even in the face of probable injuries might see David Moyes drag the Hammers out of the craziness of relegation scraps and back into the comforts of mid-table and above. And this is where Jesse Lingard comes in.

The midfielder has been training with the London club since mid-August, having been made a free agent by Nottingham Forest at the end of last season, and West Ham are still considering signing their former loanee on a permanent deal, adding that a move could happen at any time, according to The Athletic in the last 48 hours.

According to The Athletic, Moyes said of Lingard:

“Jesse is doing well and is regaining his shape.”

However, there will be no talk about Jesse. We’ll do it when we’re ready, but he’s working hard and has a terrific attitude about his work. It’s taken some time to bring him back into shape.”

Should Jesse Lingard be signed by West Ham?
If anyone can get Lingard back to his best after failing to score a single Premier League goal for Nottingham Forest last season, it could be West Ham, who have done so before.

Lingard spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan at West Ham, where he scored nine goals and assisted another five, totaling 14 goal involvements in just 16 games. Lingard was one of the Premier League’s top players while on loan under Moyes, according to the statistics.

If the Hammers sign their former loanee on a free transfer, it would be a low-risk move, and if they can get him back to his best, they could have one of the season’s best values.

Former West Ham teammate Antonio, who praised Lingard’s character, told the club’s official website last season:

“Jesse is a living legend.” I recently saw him at a concert and truly like him, but when you’re an easygoing person, everyone likes you.”
