West Ham United transfer news as Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay could stay at Manchester United amid medical news – Fabrizio Romano
West Ham United targets Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay still have chances to remain at Manchester United this summer after news of both players undergoing medicals, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Writing in his CaughtOffside substack column on Saturday morning (5 August), Romano reports that Manchester United want “important proposals” for both players, but the Hammers currently prioritising a move for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez after personal terms were agreed upon on Friday (Romano, 5 August).
Newspaper journalist Alan Nixon reported on 4 August, writing on his Patreon account that the process to sign both Maguire and McTominay have begun with the pair undergoing “long-distance medicals”.
However, Romano claims that he is not aware of such reports and that there are chances that both players could stay at Old Trafford should they not receive important bids for the pair.
He wrote: “Despite reports, I’m not aware of Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay undergoing medicals ahead of a move to West Ham at this stage. West Ham are focused on their midfield and more specifically, signing Edson Alvarez from Ajax.
“There’s a chance for both McTominay and Maguire to stay at Man United for sure, as the Manchester club will only sell if the two players receive important proposals; otherwise, they can stay.”
It’s been made pretty clear in recent weeks, through several reports and Manchester United’s exploits in pre-season that both McTominay and Maguire will endure limited game-time this coming season should they stay at Old Trafford.
With Euro 2024 emerging around the corner, this will be a crucial year for both players to get the game-time they deserve which means they have crucial decisions to make this summer.
West Ham United certainly represent the ideal platforms for both players to fulfil their first-team ambitions and it’s been made clear that Moyes is huge fans of the Manchester United duo, but whether the Hammers will cough up the considerable funds to sign them remains to be seen.
After news emerged that the Irons have agreed personal terms with Ajax midfielder Alvarez, West Ham’s priority will be clearly placed on securing his signature with the new campaign just days away now.
There are still plenty of business for the Irons to complete, with just under a month of the window to go, after they advertised on TransferRoom that they need to address seven problem positions in the squad [The Athletic, 4 August].
The Maguire and McTominay sagas could possibly be drawn out until the last week of the window, but West Ham simply do not have the time to be embroiled in all that. A decision has to be made fairly quickly.
In other West Ham news, the Irons are surely well positioned to seal the signing of this burgeoning £15m Manchester City talent.
