The Boston Red Sox have added some serious help to their rotation this offseason, adding three pitchers who could take spots in the five-man when they’re all healthy.
Free agent pitcher Jack Flaherty believes that he could’ve ended up in Boston if they didn’t make such a splash in the trade market.
“The White Sox trading away (Garrett) Crochet, who’s one of the only pieces that they have to the Red Sox,” Flaharty said on “Foul Territory” recently. “Kudos to the Red Sox for going and getting him. That takes a spot away from where I could’ve potentially gone.”
Flaherty, 29, was a first-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2014 out of North Carolina. He debuted with St. Louis in 2017 and was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in 2023.
This past year, he signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers but was traded midseason to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who he helped win a World Series. Between the two teams, he posted a 3.17 ERA, 1.068 WHIP and 10.8 K/9 in 162 innings over 28 starts.
According to Spotrac, Flaherty is projected to receive a three-year deal worth $63.17 million this offseason.
On top of Crochet, Boston also added Walker Buehler, who Flaherty played with in Los Angeles, and Patrick Sandoval. The Red Sox also get Lucas Giolito, Flaherty’s high school teammate, back from injury, so there isn’t really a spot for him anymore in the rotation.
