A basketball star from Auburn will recover from a knee injury in 2024.
Fortunately, the winningest player in school history did not sideline the Auburn Tigers for the whole campaign.
Although Auburn basketball’s defeat to Kentucky yesterday was disappointing, things could have been worse.
Star forward Jaylin Williams was assessed this morning after sustaining a non-season knee injury in yesterday’s game, according to an Auburn Athletics press release. Although Auburn did not specify a timeline, it is anticipated that he would return this season.
Unable to bear any weight on his right knee, Williams quit the game halfway through the second half and was assisted off the field. With almost 10 minutes remaining in the second half, he went up for a slam, making contact with Kentucky defenders in the air, and then landed awkwardly on his knee after tangles with one opponent.
After the game, Pearl told Auburn’s post-game radio broadcast, “Yeah, he’s hurt,” confirming that it was a serious injury. “He is wounded. What it will be is unknown to us.
However, following an MRI this morning, the club was able to establish that the injury was “non-season ending,” meaning that surgery was not required and that he should be able to play again before the end of the season.
Williams is a vital team captain, averaging 13.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this season. He was limited to just three points on one of his five shots before being forced to leave yesterday’s game.
Williams has 106 wins in 133 career games, making him the all-time leading winner in Auburn basketball history, according to the school’s press release. Bruce Pearl and his team will now have to find a way to function without him until his return.
