Following the recent Spurs waiver, may the Phoenix Suns re-sign Cameron Payne?
We are currently in an entirely new era for the Phoenix Suns. The big four of this age are Bradley Beal, Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and even Deandre Ayton. The Suns have completely moved on as only two players remain from their 2020–21 NBA Finals run: Booker and Ayton.
They are still a win-now squad, though, and that won’t probably change for a few years. That doesn’t mean they can’t keep trying to add players to this squad in order to make it better, though.
Reuniting with a former player from that period who just become free agency is one move we know they won’t be doing.
No way for Suns to sign Cameron Payne
The San Antonio Spurs have waived guard Cameron Payne, who was acquired from the Suns in a trade, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Payne, a seasoned guard with postseason experience, is free to sign with any team he wants, even a contender.
It’s just not going to be the Suns.
Bobby Marks reports that Payne was not allowed to join with Phoenix since his contract with them was about to expire at $6.5 million. A player who is released and re-signed by the original dealing team is no longer eligible to be traded to another team. Paye would have to join with another club and be discarded by that team before the Suns could make him an offer for a contract.
In Phoenix, Payne was a bit of a fan favorite, and for good reason. You could tell when he entered the game that there would be a lot of energy and trash talk despite his lack of action. Now, everyone in the arena would be aware of Payne’s huge play, should he make one.
Phoenix needs another guard with ball-handling skills, especially a veteran with playoff experience like him, even though he is not allowed to sign with the Suns. Regretfully, in 2023–2024, we will probably see him wearing a Suns uniform.
