Rumor Has It That The Cowboys Are Signing Dalvin; Better Than Pollard and Dowdle?
Dalvin Cook to the Dallas Cowboys A Rumor in the Popular Media—Better Than Rico Dowdle and Tony Pollard?
FRISCO: Is there a growing chorus in Cowboys Nation and the national media encouraging the Dallas Cowboys to sign veteran running back Dalvin Cook, who was just cut by the New York Jets, because he has “got game”?
Or is it because he’s “got name”?
Cook is free to relocate after being cut on Tuesday; ideally, he will join a playoff club and try to win a Super Bowl.
Cowboys is a playoff-bound club. They have a Super Bowl to compete for. Is there a match here?
Almost all American NFL-related media outlets linked Cook to Dallas as soon as he was released; some were aware that the Cowboys’ running game needed improvement, while others didn’t appear to know that Cook had been a disaster with the Jets.
The 28-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Jets after being released by the Vikings, with whom he had been a consistent Pro Bowl player, over the summer. His co-star would be the recently acquired Aaron Rodgers. Naturally, Rodgers’ 2023 season was cut short after just four games due to an Achilles tear.
The Jets, who are at 6-10, have relied heavily on running back Breece Hall throughout the season.
Cook, in Week 1, got sixteen touches. However, he never again had double-digit carries. He will complete the season with just 67 carries for 214 yards, zero touchdowns, and two fumbles lost, and he will undoubtedly not playing for anybody this weekend. Sick.
We are aware that he was available during the trade deadline and that Dallas was not the target of any bites. We also know that Dallas was uninterested once again when he was a summer free agent.
Have the Cowboys’ circumstances changed? Do they need to show interest right now?
The claim that Cook would provide “a fresh set of legs” has been made, and as he has been out of action for the whole year, we assume it to be accurate.
To be fair, though, Robert Saleh, the coach of the Jets, commented on the release, saying, “It’s an opportunity for him to go out there and finish the season strong.” He still has a lot of energy in his legs.
Thus, perhaps.
And in connection with Dallas? Under Tony Pollard’s direction, the Cowboys’ running game is not where it wants to be. Dallas has struggled in the red zone this season, averaging only 4.1 yards per run. The team also finishes outside of the top 10 in the league in terms of rushing yards per game.
Does Dalvin figure everything out? Perhaps a more appropriate query would be, “Is Dalvin Cook a better player than the Cowboys are depending on at running back?” This would apply to both backup Rico Dowdle and Pollard.
