When Dwayne Haskins, the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, was hit by a dump truck on a South Florida
highway in April, his blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit, according to a report from the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office that CNN received from affiliate WSVN.
Haskins, 24, was struck and killed on April 9 while attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 close to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, as CNN previously reported.
According to the report, Haskins ran out of petrol on the side of I-595 and got out of his car to hunt for more at 6:15 a.m., according to information provided to the medical examiner by the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to the report, witnesses started phoning 911 at 6:30 a.m. to report seeing a pedestrian crossing the lanes of traffic. According to the dump truck driver, he was driving in the dark when Haskins emerged in the highway’s central lane, and the driver struck him.
The investigation states that at the time of his death, Haskins’ blood alcohol content was 0.20, 2.5 times higher than Florida’s legal limit of.08.
Multiple blunt force injuries were found to be the cause of his death, according to the study.
An investigator also spoke with the head of security for the Steelers who said Haskins was training with his teammates all day and then went to dinner with the team, according to the report. After dinner, the security head said Haskins and a friend went to a club where “they drank heavily.”
“On behalf of Dwayne’s wife, his family, and his memory, and on behalf of the truth, we respectfully request and pray for privacy, for patience, and for the public to withhold any judgment during this period while the law enforcement authorities continue to investigate and conduct their important work,” a statement released on behalf of Haskins’ wife, Kalabrya Haskins, by attorney Rick Ellsley said.
The Steelers told CNN Monday night they were aware of the medical report but had no further comment at this time.
