Kamren Curl of Commanders Ranks Among the Best Free Agents
Is safety Kamren Curl going to be re-signed by the Washington Commanders this offseason?
Kamren Curl, a safety with the Washington Commanders, tweeted during Divisional Round weekend that he was “tired of being a spectator,” presumably alluding to the fact that his club had missed the playoffs for the third straight year.
Although things appear to be getting better in D.C., is it feasible that Curl leaves for better opportunities in order to participate in the playoffs more than once every four years?
Curl is scheduled to make his debut as a free agency this offseason. According to a recent ranking by Pro Football Focus, he is the 21st overall possible free agent in this year’s class.
“Curl can line up anywhere and is as consistent as safeties come on a down-to-down basis, possessing good instincts and a clear understanding of how to manipulate leverage and angles in the open field,” PFF said of the player.
Kurl, who was selected by the Washington team in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Arkansas, has amassed 385 total tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, 11 quarterback hits, and three interceptions in his four seasons there.
Although Washington finished with seven victories in his inaugural campaign, Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ultimately prevailed. The Commanders haven’t even come close to making the playoffs since then, going 19-31-1.
Adam Peters, the general manager, has been appointed by new owner Josh Harris to supervise staff. Peters will select Ron Rivera’s replacement shortly; Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, is one possibility. With the No. 2 overall choice at their disposal, Peters and the next coach will attempt to entirely erase the Daniel Snyder Era by selecting a quarterback prospect. If the Commanders want to resign him, then there are many grounds for Curl to be hopeful about their future.
However, even if C.J. Stroud of the Houston Texans was an exception this season, developing a rookie quarterback is often a process that takes time. There are also significant gaps for the Commanders at cornerback and edge rusher on the offensive line. This is a team that may be a few years away from being competitive. Furthermore, the shelf life at the post isn’t often very lengthy because of how physically demanding the work is. Even if the Commanders are finally moving in the correct direction, Curl might not have enough time to wait for them.
Washington is, of course, free to assign him the franchise tag. The franchise tag on a safety cost $14.46 million a year ago. With so many needs, as previously indicated, the Commanders’ league-high $73.6 million in cap space may be depleted rapidly. If Washington really hopes to choose a quarterback in the first round of free agency, then improving the offensive line must be the first priority.
However, even if C.J. Stroud of the Houston Texans was an exception this season, developing a rookie quarterback is often a process that takes time. . If Washington allows him to go free on the market, he will undoubtedly have suitors elsewhere.
