After three seasons, Florida State loses running back to the transfer portal.
CJ Campbell, a running back for Florida State, declared on Monday that he will use the transfer portal to play elsewhere in 2024.
On Monday, the first official day non-grad transfers can access the portal while still being eligible, Campbell joined a plethora of other college football players in doing so.
Campbell spent three seasons with Florida State after joining the team as a walk-on in 2021. In his first season, he was named FSU’s offensive scout team player of the year for 2021.
Although he’s been a walk-on in his FSU career, he’s shown potential to be a high-level running back. In 2023, he carried the ball 7 times for 117 yards and 1 touchdown. Campbell was behind Trey Benson, Rodney Hill and Lawrance Toafili for playing time this season.
He’ll now seek a scholarship and more playing time at his next destination. Quarterback Jordan Travis offered his support for Campbell shortly after the announcement was made.
Florida State is preparing to face Georgia in the Orange Bowl at the end of this season.
Princely Umanmielen, a Florida edge rusher, will use the Transfer Portal. The Gators’ junior pass rusher led them in quarterback pressures.
Florida junior edge rusher Princely Umanmielen announced Wednesday that he’ll be entering the Transfer Portal.
“We all must do what is best for us and I think this is what is best for me at the time,” Umanmielen said on social media. “Thank you, Gator Nation. #Gator 4L.”
The Manor, Texas, native set new career highs in several defensive stats with 11.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks and 17 quarterback hurries.
He led the Gators in all three categories and helped anchor a Florida defensive front that finished seventh in the SEC in pressure rate per CFBGraphs.
Outside of Umanmielen, the Gators struggled to consistently get after opposing quarterbacks.
Florida finished with the third-fewest sacks in the conference, and Umanmielen was the only player with three or more sacks. He’s also the only Gator with more than five quarterback hurries.
Florida will turn to a handful of talented young players to provide more pass rush next season without Umanmielen.
