Giants-Patriots injury report: Daniel Jones will have surgery; wide receiver Darius Slayton is not practicing

Not practicing are Slayton, Bobby Okereke, Dexter Lawrence, and Evan Neal.

In order to prepare for this week’s game against the New England Patriots, wide receiver Darius Slayton, who left Sunday’s victory over the Washington Commanders with a neck injury, won’t practice for the New York Giants on Wednesday.

Daniel Jones' Neck Injury: Future Implications for New York Giants

Brian Daboll, head coach of the Giants, stated he didn’t think Slayton’s injury would be a chronic problem. Slayton declared that he would take on the Patriots in a game.

Slayton’s injury appeared to be to his right arm. He said Wednesday, though, that it stems from his neck.

“There’s a nerve in your neck and basically, I injured that nerve in my neck, and it prefers all the way down your arm, makes your arm numb,” he said. “I was just holding my arm, so it wasn’t just flopping there. My arm went numb for a little bit there, but I’m alright.”

Three other Giants starters are also not practicing on Wednesday. Linebacker Bobby Okereke (hip/ribs) had X-rays after Sunday’s game and will be sidelined Wednesday. Okereke told media he has a partially fractured rib, but will play Sunday. Okereke also said he has been playing with a broken pinky finger since the game against the Buffalo Bills. Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence (hamstring) will sit out. Lawrence usually gets at least one rest day each week, anyway. Right tackle Evan Neal, out the last two games with an injury, will continue to miss practice.

Running back Saquon Barkley was also given a rest day.

Eric Gray on track to return

The Giants are opening the 21-day window for Eric Gray (on IR with a calf injury) to return. Gray, a rookie fifth-round pick, has 13 carries for 27 yards (2.1 yards per carry) and one reception for a single yard. Gray has returned seven punts for an average of 4.0 yards and four kickoffs for an average of 14.5 yards.

The Giants do currently have an open spot on their 53-man roster.

Daniel Jones has surgery

The Giants announced that Daniel Jones underwent successful surgery Wednesday morning to repair his torn ACL. The procedure was performed by head team physician Dr. Scott Rodeo at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Jones said on Tuesday that he expects an 8-10-month recovery timeline. The early end of that would have him on the field at the start of training camp. The long end would extend into the 2024 regular season.
