Jimmy Garoppolo of the Raiders was taken to the hospital after suffering a back injury against the Patriots.
After suffering a back injury, Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots, the organization confirmed.
Garoppolo was taken to the hospital, according to NFL.com’s Grant Gordon. According to Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper, Raiders coach Josh McDaniels stated after the game that they were “just doing tests” on the quarterback.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN (via Paul Gutierrez of ESPN), Garoppolo had “precautionary tests” to “err on the side of caution.”
Garoppolo was replaced on the field by veteran backup Brian Hoyer.
Garoppolo had completed 14-of-22 throws for 162 yards, a touchdown, and an interception prior to his exit.
Garoppolo was forced to miss the Raiders’ Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers due to a concussion received against the Pittsburgh Steelers the week before. In his place, rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell passed for 238 yards and an interception on 24-of-39 passing while also scoring on the ground.
Prior to the injury, Garoppolo struggled to get off to a good start in the 2023 season. He had 917 yards, six touchdowns, and a league-high seven interceptions into Sunday’s game.
Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract with Las Vegas this offseason after spending the previous six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. At the time, he still needed surgery on his left foot, but the Raiders decided to sign him nonetheless.
The 31-year-old, however, has not always been available to play for his squad. The Chargers game was his 17th regular-season or postseason game missed due to injury since the 2020 season.
Raiders Rumors: Jimmy Garoppolo Had Foot Surgery and Will Miss Week 1
According to Tashan Reed and Vic Tafur of The Athletic, Jimmy Garoppolo underwent foot surgery in March after signing with the Las Vegas Raiders.
“The sense is that the Raiders aren’t worried about Garoppolo being ready for the start of the regular season in September,” according to the article.
Injury plagued Garoppolo’s 2022 season. After agreeing to return to the San Francisco 49ers as Trey Lance’s backup, he was catapulted back into the starting lineup when Lance tore his ACL in Week 2.
Garoppolo performed admirably when healthy, throwing for 2,437 yards, 16 touchdowns, and four interceptions in 11 games while completing 67.2 percent of his passes. His starts for the Niners were 7-3.
