Mohamed Ibrahim, the new Detroit Lions running back, was taken off the field with an injury after his first touch.
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND — Mohamed Ibrahim, the new Detroit Lions running back, was taken off the field on Sunday after injuring himself on his first professional touch.
Ibrahim was a standout running back at the University of Minnesota, gaining 4,668 yards and scoring 53 touchdowns in five seasons. However, he has suffered a number of major injuries, which is why the Lions signed him as an undrafted free agent in May.
He was released in August but re-signed to the practice squad last week as the Lions dealt with injuries to David Montgomery and Zonovan Knight.
In the team’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Jahmyr Gibbs and Craig Reynolds handled the running back duties, but Ibrahim got his first NFL touch on a kickoff midway through the third quarter.
Ibrahim took the squib kick from the 15-yard line and returned it 21 yards to the 36-yard line. He was down on the pitch for several minutes, possibly due to a lower-body injury.
The cart soon appeared and transported Ibrahim to the tunnel. On his way out, he gave two thumbs up, but it was still a painful blow for a player who had finally made it onto an NFL field.

The Detroit Lions have added CB Jerry Jacobs to their injury list and have ruled Marvin Jones out.
The Detroit Lions added two new injuries to their injury report, with starting cornerback Jerry Jacobs now listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.
On Saturday afternoon, the Detroit Lions added two more players to their injured report. Cornerback Jerry Jacobs has been upgraded to questionable with a knee injury, while receiver Marvin Jones Jr. has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens due to an unknown personal matter.
If Jacobs is unable to play, the Lions’ defense will suffer greatly. He has been the team’s starter opposite Cameron Sutton all season, and while Emmanuel Moseley was supposed to eventually replace him, Moseley tore his ACL after only two defensive snaps this season. The good news is that he appears to be traveling with the squad (if he wasn’t, he’d be declared out), which gives him a chance to play.
If Jacobs can’t go, the Lions have a couple different options to replace him. With the return of Brian Branch to play nickel, the Lions could slide Will Harris to outside corner. Additionally, they have Khalil Dorsey or undrafted rookie Steven Gilmore.
As for Jones, I hope everything in his personal life is fine. This year, the veteran receiver hasn’t played much on offense, catching just five catches for 35 yards in six games. The Lions offense should be unaffected by Jones’ absence thanks to the return of Jameson Williams and a quality group of surrounding receivers.
