Randy Gregory’s departure indicates a shift toward youth at outside linebacker.
The Denver Broncos will give their youthful stable of pass rushers a chance to shine the rest of the season by releasing Randy Gregory.

Good morning, Broncos Nation.

The Denver Broncos parted connections with former high-profile free agency acquisition Randy Gregory yesterday, as most of you are already aware.

Originally, it was reported that he would be released, but according to Sean Payton, the team is attempting to trade him. It remains to be seen whether the Broncos can get a late-round pick in exchange for his services, but his days in Denver are clearly finished.

Gregory undoubtedly underwhelmed during his brief tenure with the franchise. It’s definitely one of the worst free agency acquisitions in recent memory, and an evident failure by George Paton, who thought it was appropriate to offer Gregory a hefty contract with two years of guaranteed money—despite the fact that Gregory’s game was never consistent other than missing time on a regular basis.

It was a horrible mistake by Jump Street, but they were sensible to get rid of him now. It’s a wise decision for the team. They will quickly absorb the majority of the dead money and can look forward to the future. In some ways, it helps Gregory, who may be able to go with a contender or a team where he can earn more playing time.

Overall, Gregory’s departure will provide plenty of opportunity for Jonathon Cooper, Nik Bonitto, and Baron Browning to flourish and develop as players [provided he is well enough to log snaps on game day]. The Broncos drafted three extremely talented players. It’s the appropriate decision to give their in-house talent as many reps as possible.

I’m excited to see how they progress during the season and am impressed with what they’ve accomplished thus far. Cooper and Bonitto have combined for 6.5 sacks in four games this season, and their game-changing tandem play late in the game against the Chicago Bears helped reverse the tide and gave the club a much-needed momentum swing to rise to victory. I’ve also noticed growth from both of them in terms of setting the edge against the run, which will be critical for them to continue to improve on as the season progresses.

Upgrading their edge group early in the draft was something I considered a few weeks ago, but if the aforementioned players can turn things up a notch the rest of the year—we might be able to chalk that up as a mid-to-late round need rather than one that needs to be addressed early in the 2024 NFL Draft. that’ll be interesting to watch how that plays out, but I’m thrilled for the Broncos’ younger pass rushers to grow as players.

Thank you for reading, as always. Feel free to discuss the Broncos’ pass rushing problem in the comments section. For now, here’s a collection of football news and videos to get your day started.
