TORONTO, ONTARIO — Marcus Smart’s yell as he rotated his right ankle could be heard across Scotiabank Arena as the Celtics guard tumbled to the court was audible throughout the arena. Smart quickly summoned Celtics trainers as Boston supporters awaited word on the guard’s status.
Smart was ruled out for the rest of the game at halftime due to an ankle sprain, as expected. Robert Williams III also missed the game due to a left knee hyperextension that he appeared to tweak in the first half. The Celtics went on to defeat the Raptors 106-104, their tenth consecutive victory, but possible injuries loomed big.
Fortunately, the Celtics received excellent news following the game. Boston coach Joe Mazzulla stated that Williams’ knee issue was “nothing serious” and that the team was taking precautions with the big man. Smart’s ankle X-rays were likewise negative, according to Mazzulla, who added that “it’s just a matter of how he’s able to cope with it day-to-day.” Derrick White, who was hit in the second half, is also doing well, according to Mazzulla.

Even if Smart has to miss a few games, the Celtics will welcome the good news. Boston also demonstrated its depth in the win over the Raptors, with players like Malcolm Brogdon, Payton Pritchard, and Grant Williams all having strong games off the bench.
Williams’ knee hyperextension is unlikely to be significant, according to Mazzulla, who also stated that it “felt good coming off the court.” So it appears Williams won’t be out for long, if at all, after his injury. The Celtics’ next game is against the Magic on Monday at 7 p.m. in Orlando.
