claims Gabby Agbonlahor When Aston Villa and Derby faced off in 2008, the players quarreled over who would score first.
Before playing Derby County in 2008, the Aston Villa players joked about who would score first, according to former striker Gabby Agbonlahor.
This occurred during the infamous season in which the Rams amassed the fewest points in Premier League history—11—a mark that has stood the test of time.
As a result of their play-off promotion the season before, Derby spent their first season back in the top division.
In a season that culminated in a humiliating relegation back to the Championship, they were led by Billy Davies and Paul Jewell.
In April 2008, Villa racked up a 6-0 victory at Pride Park, one of their greatest victories of the year. Before the game that day started, Agbonlahor clarified what was said.
“Easiest game I’ve ever played,” says Gabby Agbonlahor.
speaking on TalkSport’s The Sports Breakfast. “When we played against Derby the season that they went down, they were so bad that before the game, myself, Gareth Barry, and Ashley Young had a little laugh about it about who was going to score first,” said Agbonlahor.
“I said, ‘I’m scoring first,’ Gareth Barry said, ‘no, I’m scoring first,’ and Youngy said, ‘no, I’m scoring first.’ We all scored in the game, and we won 6-0.
The game was the simplest I’ve ever participated in. Stiliyan Petrov scored with his weaker foot from the halfway line, Marlon Harewood scored, and John Carew added a goal after coming on for Derby.
They were that terrible and lost by 11 points, which was embarrassing for Derby at the time and not good for the fan base. They resembled “whipping boys,”

Tim Iroegbunam, a midfielder for Aston Villa, may have experienced a setback in his recovery.
Dr. Rajpal Brar, a specialist in injuries, is a welcome addition to our exclusive writer lineup. He will offer his opinions on Aston Villa’s injury status every week.
Tim Iroegbunam, a midfielder for Aston Villa, may have experienced a new setback in his injury recovery, according to Dr. Rajpal Brar.
The injury expert thinks that, following the 20-year-old’s operation in May, the club is providing very little information about him.
Unai Emery stated at the beginning of September that he is working out alone, but the club has not yet provided a return date.
Sports scientist and physical therapist Dr. Brar discussed his injuries and likely comeback to Villa News, saying:
“Either his recovery is taking longer than expected, or he may have experienced a setback elsewhere or in the wounded area.
“It’s hard to make anything of the club not offering that information because most clubs like to keep that very close to the chest.
“What it looks like is he’ll be out for at least a few more weeks.“
The Englishman had a successful season in 2022–2023 while on loan at Queens Park Rangers, and there was speculation that Villa would consider him one of their top first-team candidates.
His progress has been halted by his injury, and Unai Emery hasn’t even used him in preseason.
Since there aren’t many encouraging updates coming from the club, it would be a huge surprise if he returned within the next few weeks. It does seem like a long way for him to come back.
