On Saturday, Zach Mitchell made a victorious debut for Colchester United.
The 18-year-old defender stood out with an outstanding performance in the U’s 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers at the JobServe Community Stadium.
He told Col U TV after the game, “I’m definitely delighted to make my first start.” The fans were fantastic and extremely kind. I believe we delivered a strong performance, which I hope will continue.”
Mitchell received high praise from Colchester manager Ben Garner. “I think Zach Mitchell’s debut was as good as I’ve ever seen at any club,” he told the Daily Gazette. He was great in my opinion.
I knew Zach from last season when he made his debut at Charlton, so we knew what we were getting in terms of character, and he’s boosted the group. He’s as brave as a lion on and off the ball, and he embodies everything I look for in a player in terms of tenacity and energy.”
In League Two, Jack Payne came in as a 67th-minute substitute for MK Dons, who drew 1-1 at home to Notts County in a top-of-the-table battle, and Aaron Henry went unnoticed in Crawley Town’s 4-1 win over Newport County.
Chatham Town were defeated 5-1 by Cray Wanderers in the Isthmian League Premier Division, with U21s defender Ollie Hobden playing the whole 90 minutes.
Diallang Jaiyesimi’s St Johnstone were out of action due to the international break. The 25-year-old wideman could make his Premiership debut on Saturday against Rangers, live on Sky Sports (KO 12.30pm BST).

Women’s: Henson Speaks Following Charlton Athletic’s Victory
Corinne Henson scored three goals on her return to previous club Charlton Athletic as the Hornets defeated the Addicks 3-2 on Sunday (September 10).
The defender, who rejoined the Hornets in August after a season at The Valley, put in a strong performance on the left side of defense, making a crucial block in the first half to prevent Karin Muya from equalizing with the Golden Girls leading by a single goal.
Read what the defender had to say about the homecoming, a chaotic game in the summer sun, and next week’s match against Blackburn Rovers below…
Regarding his return to Charlton Athletic:
On a busy game for the defensive unit:
I think in the first half we were definitely more compact, they couldn’t get in behind us. Maybe it wasn’t the same the second half, but the scoreline still shows that we did enough to keep goals out at the back.
On her first-half block:
I saw the turn and the net was there, so that’s what I’m good at, sliding in like that. So to me, that’s as good as a goal in terms of the feeling.
Regarding the season’s first victory:
We’re only getting started, so I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do together this season.
The evolution of the team, coaching, and ideology is seen in our performances, and now we have the points to show for it.
Next week’s match against Blackburn Rovers:
Football matches come quickly, and we’re looking forward to going out and attempting to get three points once more.
