GOOD SIGNING: PAUL MERSON REACTS TO MIDFIELDER TRANSFER RUMOURS FROM ASTON VILLA
Paul Merson believes Philippe Coutinho’s anticipated transfer from Aston Villa to Qatari club Al Duhail on the last day of the transfer window is a “good signing for both.”
The ex-Aston Villa player stated that he was first “shocked” when the team opted to sign the playmaker from Barcelona.
At the time, Philippe Coutinho secured a loan transfer to Villa Park before it was made permanent. Merson added that Villa ‘didn’t need’ the player, as he said on Deadline Day on Sky Sports (01/09/23 at 3:30 pm). At the time, Steven Gerrard was in control.
The Qatari champions Al Duhail are reportedly close to signing the versatile midfielder, according to Sky Sports, so it only seems a matter of time until Coutinho leaves the club.
The 31-year-old last played for Villa in their 4-0 Premier League victory against Everton at home. He came off the bench and did well before getting hurt again.
The Brazil star’s performances haven’t been outstanding, but the lackluster results haven’t helped.
Regarding Coutinho’s relocation to the Middle East, Merson stated, “I think he suits that.”
“At the moment, I was pretty startled that Villa made an offer for Coutinho. They didn’t need him, in my opinion. He seems to fit the Saudi league, in my opinion. For both sides, the deal will be beneficial.
For Coutinho, it hasn’t worked UNDER GERRARD ALONE.
It’s unfortunate for the player since he hasn’t been able to show off his skills because he has spent a lot of time in the treatment room since Unai Emery joined Villa.
Nevertheless, he has looked excellent when he has been on the field.
It only stopped working for Coutinho under Steven Gerrard, who was able to degrade the play of almost every Villa player.
Having said that, he should depart since, in addition to his performances, it appears that his physique can no longer handle playing English football.
