Leeds United Face Fresh Competition From Burnley For 17 Goal Forward
Leeds United are facing a fresh challenge from Premier League Burnley over the signing of Joseph Paintsil, according to Sacha Tavolieri via GET Football News.
Burnley have turned their attention to Leeds United target Joseph Paintsil from Genk after failing to secure the the signature of his teammate Mike Trésor. The Elland Road club had been in discussions over a potential loan deal, however his current club were insistent on an obligatory purchase clause which put the Championship side off.
The Ghanaian winger could now be set for a move to the Premier League under Vincent Kompany who is now set to formalise their interest in the winger.
Who Is Joseph Paintsil?
The 25-year-old joined Genk in 2018 where he has remained, with the exception of a loan spell at Ankaragucu. He has since made 143 appearances for his parent club scoring on 32 occasions whilst also chipping in with 25 goals. He had a remarkable 22/23 season, scoring 17 goals in 36 appearances providing 11 assists. He is yet to score so far this season but has provided twice for his teammates. Paintsil also found himself given marching orders following a red card, in their 1-1 draw with Olympiacos in the Europa League qualifying rounds.
Whether or not Leeds reignite their interest in the player as they look to secure talents at the end of the window remains to be seen, but if they do they will likely find it more difficult with the tantilising prospect of Premier League football with Vincent Kompany now on the table.
Writer’s View
I suspect this is an option Leeds explored, but didn’t want to get tied into an obligation to buy if the player flops or fails to transfer his goalscoring exploits to English football. It is interesting to see Burnley interested, but the Premier League side can afford to take more of a risk in the Premier League.
