West Ham offered Callum Hudson-Odoi as Conor Gallagher talks slow

West Ham United have been offered Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi during talks with the Blues over Conor Gallagher, according to reliable West Ham source Shaun Whetstone.

The Irons have taken a step back in talks for Gallagher after news broke that he intended to fight for his place at Stamford Bridge, but instead, the Blues were keen to discuss the possibility of Hudson-Odoi heading to the London Stadium.

Only back in 2020 the winger was so highly thought of by the Blues that they rejected a bid of £70m from Bayern Munich to keep him in England, but now Chelsea are actively trying to sell the 22-year-old who spent last season on loan with Bayer Leverkusen.

Speaking to his audience of other 40,000 followers on Twitter, Whetstone, the Editor of 6foot2, wrote: “West Ham pull out of Conor Gallagher bidding after he reveals he wants to fight for his place at Chelsea. West Ham have been offered Callum Hudson-Odoi. Meanwhile, Carlos Borges is the only signing that remains close.”

Hudson-Odoi featured only 14 times in the Bundesliga last season, failing to score once and only providing his teammates with one assist and having returned to the Bridge is for sale with little chance of seeing his deal extended past the remaining 12 months.

There has been no suggestion that this is a deal that the Hammers have any interest in proceeding with and that feels like a wise call as the Hudson-Odoi that they have been offered is a million miles away from the one that was once compared with Bukayo Saka.

When both players broke through there was plenty of debate about who was the better player and who had the higher ceiling. Yet only a few years on, one is spearheading their team’s unlikely title challenge, while the other is in the shop window.

The Irons do want new attacking options as well as a holding midfielder to lessen the blow of losing Declan Rice, but Hudson-Odoi represents the sort of gamble they really don’t need to take this summer.

David Moyes wants guaranteed quality, not a coin-flip on a player that could be special if he rediscovers some old form. There are enough streaky wide men already at the London Stadium and the last thing the Hammers need is another.

It seems as though West Ham only want one man from Chelsea this summer and while that deal seems to be stalled for now, they shouldn’t purchase Hudson-Odoi just to wet the pallet and please Chelsea.
