Kansas City Chiefs sign an undrafted defender they’ve been quietly tracking for some time now

The rookie minicamp gave undrafted players a chance to show their talent and try out for a place in the squad.

At the beginning of May, i.e. at the rookie minicamp, the Kansas City Chiefs hosted some players in a tryout with the intention of eventually signing one of them.

During this period, wide receiver Jaaron Hayek stood out and was offered a contract to join the team.

However, he doesn’t seem to have been KC’s only target.

The name that caught the Chiefs’ eye

After rookie minicamp ended, Alex Gubner was invited by Kansas City to join the squad for mandatory activities, which began last Thursday.

Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star reported that the young talent had signed with the franchise on Thursday.

The only possibility of the player being able to fit in the activities that took place this week would be if the organisation let someone go. In this case, punter Ryan Rehkow was the unlucky one.

As a curiosity, the rookie was present, by invitation, at the Denver Broncos minicamp before starting to practice with the Chiefs.

Who is Alex Gubner

Hailing from West Hills, California, Gubner is a defensive tackle that played his collegiate years for Montana University. He’s 6-foot-3 and 284 pounds.

In 2023, he won Defensive Player of the Year in the Big Sky Conference. Over the course of his final year, he recorded 45 tackles, 9.5 of which were tackles for loss, and secured three sacks, contributing to the Griz’ trip to the FCS national championship game.

He finished his time with the Montana Grizzlies totalling 124 tackles (48 solo), 28.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. Gubner also forced a fumble and blocked a kick.
