Montreal Canadiens sign Oliver Kapanen to entry-level contract

Montreal Canadiens have signed Oliver Kapanen to a three year entry level deal. Kapanen was the 64th selection in the 2021 NHL draft and has played in the Finnish top league the last three seasons with KalPa from Kuopio.

While Kapanen’s development has been slow, it has always been a positive trajectory. After finishing his National Service this past summer, he was slow to get into the hockey side of things, but after the new year he had been steadily improving to explode in the playoffs as KalPa’s leading scorer and first line centre. Due to his slow progress, he has mostly been a forgotten prospect among Canadiens fans.

Timrå, whom Kapanen signed with prior to the World Championships this year, has congratulated Kapanen and clarified what will happen forward.

“Kapanen will go over to Montreal for camp at the 18th of September, if he doesn’t make the roster he will return to Timrå according to the clause in the contract.”
