Newcastle United have announced that goalkeeper Mark Gillespie’s contract has been extended, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2024/25 season.
The 32-year-old has been at the club since July 2020 and has been an influential member of the squad despite a small number of first team appearances.
Gillespie recently made an appearance for the Magpies in their penalty shootout win against Tottenham Hotspur in the first post-season tour game in Australia.
He made a vital save in the shootout which proved to be enough for the Magpies to win 5-4.
Gillespie “delighted” to be extending his contract
The Newcastle-born keeper has made three senior appearances for the club and was been a prominent feature on the bench during the 2023/24 season.
Gillespie said: “I’m delighted to be extending my contract into next season. This is the club I grew up supporting and it’s a hugely exciting time to be a part of it.
“We have a brilliant group in the dressing room and at the training ground, and it’s a great environment to work in. I’m already looking forward to pre-season and to getting back onto the grass.”
Eddie Howe credits Gillespie’s attitude
Despite not signing him, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has been full of praise for Gillespie.
On Gillespie, Howe said: “Mark’s attitude to his work and his consistency are of the highest order.
“He continues to set an example in how he trains, plays and supports his teammates, and that’s a hugely important component in any squad. I’m delighted to have him with us.”
