Bayer Leverkusen Make Celtic Midfielder Approach
In a hugely unexpected development, recently crowned invincible Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen are interested in a move for Celtic starlet Daniel Kelly.
The 18-year-old has broken into Brendan Rodgers’ first team this season and won the Hoops’ Academy Player of the Year award.
His current Parkhead contract expires at the end of the year with a renewal yet to be agreed upon and a European suitor has emerged.
According to Football Scotland, Leverkusen views Kelly as a ‘serious talent’ for his age group and wants to strike a deal with the Bhoys. Because he is not tied down to a long-term contract at Parkhead, they could get Kelly for as little as half a million pounds in compensation fees.
It is said, however, that Celtic wants to keep the youngster at the club, and the feeling is that successful contract renewal talks can convince him to stay; discussions about a new deal will take place later this week.
Rodgers views him as part of the first team and has given the teen opportunities this campaign.
A move to Germany with a team who are on for a historic invincible treble, though, may be difficult to turn down.
The Bundesliga is known for giving youngsters significant chances, too, and there is a growing number of young Scots moving abroad and succeeding such as Lewis Ferguson and Max Johnston.
It seems as though the ball is in Kelly’s court with this one. He knows what he is getting at Celtic having been at the club through his youth, but a switch to Germany will undoubtedly be tempting.
