Florida State had a key departure early Wednesday afternoon, as sophomore big Cam Corhen will be entering the transfer portal, per Tobias Bass of The Athletic. Corhen averaged 9.4 PPG and 3.9 RPG this season.
This is the first big loss of the offseason so far for the Seminoles, as Corhen had some big games down the stretch of the season, including 25 points and 8 rebounds at Pitt early in March. FSU always envisioned him in a Mfiondu Kabengele-type role but had to rely on him on both ends of the floor more than they would’ve preferred. He had some good games defensively, like against DJ Burns and NC State in February, but he was never going to be a strong defensive piece for Leonard Hamilton. Still, Corhen was one of the few major bright spots on the team and it’s not enjoyable to see him depart.
Coach Hamilton and his staff now have to add big men in the transfer portal as they don’t have any on the roster currently. Some broadcasts throughout the season mentioned that Coach Hamilton wanted to bring in three 7-footers this offseason but we’ve yet to see them gain any traction with some so far. The only bigs that FSU has contacted (that have been publicly announced) that are still on the market are Oklahoma’s John Hugley IV, Drexel’s Amari Williams, and UT-Chattanooga’s Sam Alexis, none of those being 7-footers.
Corhen is the sixth portal entry from FSU thus far, joining Baba Miller, Primo Spears, Tom House, De’Ante Green, and Waka Mbatch. His departure also means that Chandler Jackson is the last member standing in the 2022 recruiting class that finished in the top 20 in the country. To say that recruiting class has underwhelmed would be a massive understatement.
