Sunderland midfielder Corry Evans will leave the club on a free transfer this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Evans, 33, is out of contract at the Stadium of Light in June this year and the Black Cats have informed him they will not be exercising their 12-month extension option included in his deal.

The Northern Ireland international is now free to find a new club ahead of becoming a free agent in July.

Evans has worked his way back to fitness after recovering from an ACL injury he sustained in January 2023, making three appearances off the bench since returning to action in March.

The former Manchester United youngster is set to feature for Northern Ireland in their June friendlies against Spain and Andorra to boost his match fitness.

Corry Evans enjoyed mixed time at Sunderland

It’s been a mixed time for Evans at Sunderland after he enjoyed a hugely successful first season with the club before picking up his injury last year.

The central midfielder was appointed captain by former boss Lee Johnson following his arrival at the Stadium of Light in 2021 after spending eight years at Blackburn Rovers.

After helping the club to promotion in his first season, he saw the following campaign cut short by his knee injury.

It took the Northern Irishman more than a year to recover from that blow and it has effectively brought his time at the Stadium of Light to an end.

Evans will now be looking to use the upcoming internationals to prove his fitness and show any interested parties he still has plenty to offer.
