Following the 2023 regular season, Dabo Swinney is reorganizing his staff. Clemson football announced on Thursday that Swinney had fired offensive line coach Thomas Austin and parted ways with defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall.
Swinney hasn’t let go of an assistant coach who isn’t a coordinator since 2011. That year, he fired offensive coordinator Billy Napier as well as running backs coach Andre Powell.
Austin was the offensive line coach for two seasons. The former Tigers player worked for Swinney in a variety of capacities for seven seasons at Clemson over two stints. In 2021, he served as an interim tight ends coach and in 2022, he worked as an off-field analyst.
This season, the Clemson offensive line received a lot of flak. According to Pro Football Focus, the Tigers were ranked 95th in run block grade and 73rd in pass block grade nationwide. The Tigers had trouble winning the line of scrimmage at times, as Clemson gave up 20 sacks.
“It is my responsibility as head coach to make difficult decisions that I believe are in the best interest of our football program and the young men that comprise it,” Swinney said in a statement. “This was a modification we felt was necessary, in my opinion, after a few days of careful consideration and assessment. Thomas has served as an excellent player, coach, and support staff member for Clemson University and Clemson football in all of these capacities.”
Austin did not provide a statement for Clemson’s announcement.
Hall worked for three seasons as a defensive analyst before taking over as defensive ends coach in 2018. In the early 1990s, he played at Alabama with Swinney.
