Cardinals Insider: Superstar Will Sign St. Louis Extension
One of St. Louis’ best talents could wind up signing a deal this summer.
In not too far off time, the St. Louis Cardinals will need to make a significant choice.
After the 2024 season, Paul Goldschmidt, a standout for St. Louis, will be eligible for free agency. Throughout the 2023 season, Goldschmidt was the subject of trade speculations; nevertheless, he ended up staying with the team, even though St. Louis made a lot of money off of him before the trade deadline.
Additionally, there has been a lot of conjecture that the two parties may reach an agreement on a contract extension this offseason, which would most likely keep Goldschmidt in St. Louis for the remainder of his professional career. It’s uncertain what will happen at this point, but it sounds like an extension is definitely a possibility.
This offseason, St. Louis insider Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat made five audacious predictions and said that Goldschmidt and the Cardinals would extend their deal by two years.
“Goldschmidt is scheduled to become a free agent in the winter of next year, but there is strong desire on all sides for him to play out his career in St. Louis. Nevertheless, given the team-wide fiasco from the previous season, there doesn’t seem to be a rush to wrap things up this winter. Those conversations might naturally increase up in the spring, but they might continue throughout the season.
In addition to being a sobering warning, Matt Carpenter’s most recent agreement in St. Louis makes sense as a model when expanded to take Goldschmidt’s prior achievements into consideration. September is his 37th birthday, so it would be mutually beneficial for both parties to reach an agreement that would get him close to 40 (or even past 40 if, for example, he reaches a particular number of plate appearances).
Even while this doesn’t confirm that negotiations for an extension are continuing, it’s encouraging to hear from an insider that a new deal could be in the works. Although Goldschmidt had a poor year in 2023, in 2022 he was awarded the National League Most Valuable Player Award.
