Bill O’Brien becomes the head coach at Boston College.
Bill O’Brien, a former head coach of the Penn State Rams and Houston Texans, is joining Boston College. On Friday afternoon, the school hired O’Brien to lead the program in place of Jeff Hafley, who just departed to take a position as the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. Boston-born O’Brien most recently served as the New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator. Before getting hired by Boston College last month, he accepted the similar job offer from Ohio State.
“Bob O’Brien, his wife Colleen, and his sons Jack and Michael are a wonderful addition to Boston College,” a statement from the athletic director read. “When we embarked on this search, we prioritized finding a coach who believes in our mission and vision, who has a plan for greatness on and off the field, and who will work tirelessly to elevate BC Football.” The 54-year-old O’Brien was hired by Ohio State to replace head coach Ryan Day in charge of play calling. According to ESPN, O’Brien’s family is from the Boston area and intended to stay there even though he was in Columbus.
Later Friday, the Buckeyes brought on UCLA head coach Chip Kelly as their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Boston College finished 7-6 in 2023 and is getting a coach with a blue-chip pedigree.
