Throughout the 2023 NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles have experienced their fair share of highs and lows. Thankfully, the positives have outnumbered the negatives thus far, as the Eagles have an 11-4 record heading into Week 17, good enough for first place in the NFC East.
The offseason won’t be far behind with the playoffs quickly approaching. Although a lot of supporters have grown accustomed to the Eagles roster for this season, with free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft taking place in the next four months, adjustments are unavoidable.
Put another way, there’s a good chance you’ll see some well-known faces departing the City of Brotherly Love soon.
These five Eagles will most certainly depart Philadelphia in the New Year.
Most Likely Gone in 2024: Five Eagles
1. RB’s Rashaad Penny
Following Miles Sanders’ offseason departure to join the Carolina Panthers, the Eagles used D’Andre Swift and Rashaad Penny as a two-man backfield.
In Week 17, Swift has accumulated 1,197 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns on a career-high 254 touches; in contrast, Penny has completely faded into the background. With just two games played this season, the 27-year-old veteran running back has gained 17 yards on five carries and one five-yard reception.
Penny’s availability was restricted by injuries in previous seasons, but not this one. Because of his preference to deploy Kenneth Gainwell as the team’s RB2, head coach Nick Sirianni has mostly been responsible for Penny’s decision to sit out the last six games.
There’s little reason to think that Penny will return to Philadelphia given that he is scheduled to enter free agency this winter. He’s not useful to the Eagles, and he probably wants to be a part of a team that will value a rusher with a career average of 5.7 yards per carry.
