Steelers Sign Trace McSorley, a former Penn State quarterback
Trace McSorley joins the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad.
Pittsburgh — The Pittsburgh Steelers announced that they have added quarterback Trace McSorley, a former standout player at Penn State, to their practice squad.
The 28-year-old McSorley spent the summer with the New England Patriots but was cut before the 53-man roster cutoff. After that, he briefly signed with the Chicago Bears practice squad this season.
McSorely will fill in as the team’s third quarterback while they await Kenny Pickett’s return. Following ankle surgery, Pickett is expected to miss two to four weeks of play. As a result, Mitch Trubisky will start and Mason Rudolph will backup.
The Steelers can elevate McSorley to the active/inactive roster for up to three games and utilize him as the third quarterback. He does not need to be active in order to dress, and can enter the game if Trubisky and Rudolph are unable to finish.
The former sixth-round pick out of Penn State was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens and has spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, Patriots and Bears.
