A break to Bru McCoy’s ankle requires surgery for the Vols wide receiver.
The current status of Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy following his injury sustained during the game against South Carolina
The Tennessee Volunteers announced that wide receiver Bru McCoy had surgery overnight to fix a fracture-dislocation on his right ankle.
Tennessee released a statement saying, “Bru McCoy suffered a fracture-dislocation of his right ankle on Saturday night and underwent successful surgery this morning.”
“Thank you for your prayers and support, both since last night and in the coming days, for Bru and his family. As a Vol, Bru has consistently shown tenacity, character, and leadership both on and off the field. Now that he is starting the healing process, he is determined to make this just a small setback in his football career.
McCoy was taken to a local hospital in Knoxville after suffering what appeared to be a serious lower leg injury in Saturday’s game against South Carolina.
Moments after making a 17 yard reception, McCoy’s lower right leg bent awkwardly under the weight of a tackle by Gamecocks defender Marcellas Dial. Video of the injury is below, although we warn you the imagery is graphic.
Trainers rushed to McCoy’s aid on the field and he was ultimately placed on a cart and driven off the field. From there, he was taken to UT Medical Center by ambulance for further observation. McCoy’s family was with him for the trip, ESPN reported.
Vols head coach Josh Heupel didn’t go into much detail on the injury when speaking during the game, but did note that it “obviously” didn’t look good for the player.
“Obviously, doesn’t look good,” Heupel told SEC Network. “I hate it for the kid. Not a better kid, not a tougher kid in the country.”
McCoy came into Saturday’s game as the Volunteers’ second-most productive wide receiver target, catching 15 passes for 196 yards this season. He had two receptions for 21 yards prior to his injury.
The former transfer from USC was Tennessee’s leading returning receiver coming into this season. A year ago, he had 52 catches for 667 yards and four touchdowns.
