The Phillies agreed to terms on one-year contracts with Cave, Covey and Stubbs before the 8 p.m. ET tender deadline. They also tendered contracts to five other salary arbitration-eligible players: infielder Alec Bohm, right-hander Jeff Hoffman, infielder Edmundo Sosa, left-hander Gregory Soto and left-hander Ranger Suárez.

The Phillies did not tender a contract to left-hander Josh Fleming, whom the team claimed off waivers on Nov. 6.

The Phillies traded one prospect for two before Tuesday’s 5 p.m. ET deadline to add players to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft.

They sent Dunn to the Brewers for Moore and Mendez. Moore will be ranked as the Phillies’ No. 25 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. Mendez will become the No. 30 prospect in the system.

Dunn, 26, was just named the Arizona Fall League’s Breakout Player of the Year. He was eligible for next month’s Rule 5 Draft, but the Phillies had no plans to add him to the 40-man roster. So, they swapped Dunn for two younger prospects who do not need to be protected yet.

Moore, 21, is the son of longtime baseball executive Dayton Moore. A Competitive Balance Round B pick in the 2022 Draft, Moore batted .233 with eight home runs, 62 RBIs and a .682 OPS in 563 plate appearances with High-A Wisconsin. Mendez, 20, batted a combined .258 with three home runs, 30 RBIs and a .679 OPS at the Rookie-level and High-A

Painter had Tommy John surgery with ulnar nerve transposition surgery on July 25 in Los Angeles. Orthopedist Neal ElAttrache performed the procedures. The typical timeline to return to play is 15 to 18 months.

Painter will miss the entire 2024 season, according to the Phillies. They first tried a conservative rehab process, following the opinions of their doctors and ElAttrache, who works closely with Painter’s agent Scott Boras.

“I know we’ll be looking at [Painter] and thinking in 2025 that he has a chance to be in our rotation at that time,” president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said. “But that’s a long time away.
