From walk-on to scholarship player, it appears that the football career for one of Michigan’s running backs has come to an end.
After three years with the Michigan Football program, and beginning his career as a walk-on, running back Isaiah Gash was set to enter his senior year with the Wolverines as a scholarship player. Unfortunately, Gash announced on Monday that he was undergoing career ending surgery via his TikTok account.
As a walk-on in 2020, Gash did not see any game action during his freshman season at Michigan. During his second year, Gash appeared in two games and finished the season with a total of six carries for 17 yards – earning his first varsity letter.
Things progressed significantly for Gash during his junior season in 2022, making significant contributions offensively and on special teams. In fact, Gash shared Offensive Player of the Week honors for the Wolverines for his performance against Illinois – carrying the ball three times for six yards, along with three receptions for 24 yards (including a fourth down conversion) on Michigan’s game-winning drive.
Though Michigan’s backfield is certainly loaded with guys like Corum, Edwards, and CJ Stokes in the mix, Gash had proven to be a valuable asset to the Wolverines – and the scholarship offered by head coach Jim Harbaugh is clear evidence of that.

Michigan football running back undergoes career-ending surgery
Michigan running back Isaiah Gash was entering his fourth season as a Wolverine. Gash started his Michigan career as a walk-on player who worked his tail off to earn valuable playing time.
His hard work paid off because, in January, coach Jim Harbaugh announced Gash had earned a scholarship entering his senior year on the team.
But on Monday, Gash posted on TikTok that he was getting career-ending knee surgery.
Gash will be forever remembered by Michigan fans for his play against Illinois to keep the Wolverines’ undefeated season alive. Michigan was facing a fourth down on the Illini 45-yard line and the Wolverines threw a pass to Gash for a first down to keep the Michigan season alive. Jake Moody ended up kicking a game-winning field goal for the Wolverines to beat Illinois
During his freshman year, Gash didn’t receive any game action. During his sophomore campaign, Gash received six carries for 17 yards. And last year, his junior season, he played in nine games. He received 19 carries for 101 yards and two scores. Plus, Gash caught three passes for 24 yards.
Gash finishes his Michigan career as a two-time letterman, and he was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree in 2021. We wish Gash nothing but the best and a fast healing.
