LB for the Falcons Coach Smith is unsure whether Troy Andersen will return after surgery.
Following his placement on injured reserve, Atlanta Falcons coach Arthur Smith delivered an update on linebacker Troy Andersen.

The Atlanta Falcons’ starting inside linebacker Troy Andersen will be sidelined for the foreseeable future, and maybe the rest of the season.

Andersen was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday after injuring his pectoral after a tackle late in the fourth quarter of the Detroit Lions’ 20-6 loss on Sunday.

Following an initial examination, Falcons coach Arthur Smith stated Monday that Andersen could miss the final 14 games of the season.

And after receiving final imaging, Smith reiterated similar thoughts while announcing that surgery is looming for the second-year pro out of Montana State.

“You never know what the recovery timeline is,” Smith said. “Everybody’s different. … Until they have the surgery, you don’t know what the timeline is. … It’s hard for me to predict. Again, I just know there are different variations of it, and everybody’s timeline is different.”

Even with missing Week 2’s win over the Green Bay Packers due to a concussion, Andersen ranked third on Atlanta’s defense in tackles with 18 while adding half a sack and one tackle for loss.

Smith dubbed Andersen, a second-round pick in 2022, as a “unique player,” citing his size (6-4, 235 pounds), speed (4.42 40-yard dash) and instincts while singling out his ability to impact games in coverage and as a pass rusher.
