Raiders fire head coach Josh McDaniels, general manager David Ziegler

Las Vegas is the first team in the league to fire its head coach this season

Josh McDaniels and David Ziegler are no longer with the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Raiders, who are now 3-5 this season, made the announcement late on Tuesday night that they had fired general manager Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels. A day after the Raiders’ 26-14 loss to the Detroit Lions, the news was made.

This season, the Raiders have fired their head coach, becoming the first team in the league to do so. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Antonio Pierce, the linebackers coach, is anticipated to be named the team’s acting coach. The Raiders will be led by Pierce, who left his position as an assistant at Arizona State due to an NCAA investigation, this week before they take on the New York Giants on Sunday. Nine seasons of NFL play were completed by Pierce, five of which he spent with the Giants, including their 2007 Super Bowl victory.

It’s unknown when Davis plans to hire a coach or who he could consider for the full-time position.

In the midst of his second season as the Raiders’ head coach, McDaniels was 9-16 in Las Vegas. After he served as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots for ten years, winning three Super Bowls with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, he was hired by the Raiders. After spending two seasons as head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2009 and 2010, he was hired by the Raiders for his second tenure in the league. Midway through his second season with the Broncos, he was also fired.

When they hired McDaniels, the Raiders offered him a six-year contract.

The Raiders also hired Ziegler when they brought in McDaniels. Ziegler worked in the Patriots’ front office for much of McDaniels’ time there, and was promoted to their director of player personnel before landing the job in Las Vegas. The two also worked together in Denver, and were teammates in college at John Carroll University.

The Raiders have gone just 3-5 this season, and have lost five of their past seven games. The Raiders managed 157 yards of offense in their loss to the Lions on Monday night while allowing Detroit to rack up just shy of 500. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo — who was hurt and missed last week’s loss to the Chicago Bears — didn’t complete a pass to a wide receiver in the first half, and both star wide receiver Davante Adams and All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs were left extremely frustrated in Detroit

These offensive problems have persisted throughout the season. The Raiders are outscoring just the Giants in terms of average yardage per game (268.3) and outscoring the Patriots and Giants combined (15.8).

Davis decided to call it and make a change, thus, hours after the trade deadline had passed.
