Warrington Wolves injury news ahead of the Super League play-offs

WARRINGTON WOLFS will keep a tight eye on two of their players’ injuries ahead of Saturday’s play-off eliminator at St Helens.

However, it is not thought the participation of winger Josh Thewlis and prop Tom Mikaele is in any serious doubt at this stage.

Thewlis and Mikaele both picked up knocks during the 20-8 victory at Huddersfield Giants on Friday in the final round of the regular season as The Wire sealed their play-off berth.

Winger Matty Ashton – the team’s leading try-scorer this season – missed that game through illness but is believed to have recovered and looks set to return to the side for this weekend.

Interim head coach Gary Chambers said the team will play it careful with Thewlis and Mikaele in training this week, but he expects to have a full squad to choose from with the exception of suspended Paul Vaughan.

“There’s a few bumps and bruises but we think we’ve pulled through okay,” he told reporters.

Josh Thewlis got a pretty bad dead leg that he’s dealing with and Tom Mikaele got a bit of a knock to his glute – he limped off a little bit.

“We’ll check on them tomorrow – I don’t think they will do any running at first but apart from them, we look okay.

“Matty is on the mend – he was desperate to play but we couldn’t take that chance as he was really unwell.

“Touch wood, we’re fortunate at this point in the season that, with the exception of Vaughany, we’re looking quite healthy.”

“Everyone is training to get a spot, and there is a lot of competition.”

“We’ve been competitive in the past six weeks – we’re rolling against everyone we’ve come up against and that puts us in good stead.”

Warrington boost their play-off chances

It was a clinical and ruthless display from Warrington, who won their first game at home in three months.

The Wire ran in 11 tries, and could have had a couple of more tries on another day.

There were a number of big performers for the Wire, with half-back George Williams and full-back Matt Dufty striking up a lethal combination as well as some big displays in the pack from Paul Vaughan, James Harrison and Jordan Crowther.

Warrington’s win sees them sit fifth in the Super League table, two points behind fourth-placed Leigh and above sixth-placed Hull KR on points difference.

Duo show their class

Every Warrington player stood up well and had a good game – but Williams and Dufty probably stood out above anyone else on the park.

Dufty scored two tries as he scooped the Sky Sports man of the match award, whilst Williams bagged a brace to hit 100 career tries.

The pair were almost telepathic at times and their support play for one another was second to none.

If the Wolves are going to really compete with the teams at the top of the table from now until the play-offs, then Williams and Dufty will be key to that.
