Everton: £22 million Toffees star Idrissa Gueye could be replaced shortly.

The Toffees must give their £22 million general one last chance to impress.

Despite some undoubtedly good performances, Everton’s start to the season has been disappointing, and they will need to start picking up more points if they are to stay in the Premier League for another year.

The current squad has flaws, but they were widely known before the competition began. Demarai Gray’s departure has left them significantly short of wingers, and if James Tarkowski or Jarrod Bowen were to be injured, the quality of the next line of replacements would plummet dramatically.

Fortunately, one of their best areas is the midfield, where they have a plethora of talents with diverse skill sets. Sean Dyche, despite all of his problems at Goodison Park, is unexpectedly loaded with engine room choices.

As a result, one of the more defensive-minded players, Idrissa Gueye, might be swapped out in an effort to inject some more creativity into that area, helping them add to the two goals in four games that they have scored – both of which were in just one encounter.

Idrissa Gueye is doing well.
If anyone were to suffer as a result of such a move, it would have to be the 33-year-old Gueye, who, despite being as tireless as ever, has become somewhat of a liability due to his poor judgments and limited passing range, which frequently sees him dispossessed in dangerous places.

Idrissa Gueye’s Premier League Season’s Average Rating Errors Leading to Goals & Shots
2023/24 season 6.95 0
2022/23 season 6.90 3
2018/19 season 7.09 1
2017/18 season 7.00 1

Despite this, he has a 6.95 average rating in the league, which is primarily supported by his three tackles and 9.3 ball recoveries per game, according to Sofascore. However, with Amadou Onana in that area as well, who boasts 1.8 tackles, 4.3 ball recoveries, and 1.3 vital passes per game, Dyche can easily afford to surrender one of these stalwarts in pursuit of more goals.

Even if only for a few games, he could try out one of their forgotten talents, Andre Gomes, giving him one more chance to impress before being shown the exit door.

How talented is Andre Gomes?
The potential candidate has had a quick descent into relative oblivion on Merseyside, despite being one of the most well-loved figures not long ago.

Andre Gomes’ initial loan transfer from Barcelona was so successful that Marco Silva decided to spend £22 million to buy him in permanently.

After all, he had wowed with his fluid play style and graceful demeanor, both of which captivated the fanbase. And, given that he was joining from a club that had massively invested in his future, it was a tremendous triumph for the plucky Toffees to tear the “midfield maestro” from their grasp, as writer Andrew Gaffney dubbed him.

According to Sofascore, in the French top tier, the Portugal international would score three goals, assist two, maintain an 89% pass accuracy, and register 0.5 crucial passes and 1.4 tackles per game. In comparison, this goal tally would have put him Everton’s third-highest Premier League scorer, with only midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure scoring more.

Although he is unlikely to light up the division, given the investment made during his time on Merseyside, it is undoubtedly worth giving him one more chance to establish his worth and provide the attacking energy they have been lacking.
