On Friday night, the summer transfer window was officially closed when Aston Villa added one more player to Unai Emery’s roster on the final day.
Following the summer additions of Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby, and Nicolo Zaniolo, Clement Lenglet became the club’s fifth newcomer. After the departures of Cameron Archer, Marvelous Nakamba, Wesley, Aaron Ramsey, Keinan Davis, and Jainan Philogene, Villa spent approximately twice as much as they earned through player sales, which totaled £40 million.

Tielemans, Youri This summer, Tielemans was the first to arrive, and Villa’s recruitment staff was thrilled to have beaten off clubs like Roma and AC Milan for the Belgian international. He moved to Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City when that team was demoted to the Championship, although he has yet to make his debut in the Premier League. In the double pivot Emery frequently uses in midfield, he will need to unseat either Douglas Luiz or Boubacar Kamara, but Tielemans will be a valuable addition to the Villa team as they aim to contend on all fronts this season, especially in the Europa Conference League.

Pau Torres: Torres came from Emery’s old team Villarreal in a £31.5 million transfer. Despite interest from other teams, notably Bayern Munich, he persuaded the center-back to join the initiative he is leading at Villa Park. Torres is essential to Villa’s ability to advance possession from deep and move the ball through the thirds. As he adjusts to the rigors of Premier League play, Emery has advised that the center-back need to strengthen his one-on-one defense. Score: 9/10

Diaby, Moussa: Earlier this summer, Villa beat Al-Nassr to the signing of Diaby, and under Emery, he has gotten right to work. In his first three Premier League games, the France international has two goals, both of which came in away games against Newcastle and Burnley. Diaby is a wonderful fit for Emery’s starting XI, and Villa went above and above to secure his signing. 10 out of 10
Nicolo Zaniolo: Zaniolo will spend the rest of the season on loan at Villa from Galatasaray, and the club have a option to buy him. He’s a low-risk transfer and adds much-needed depth in forward areas, after Emi Buendia was ruled out for an extended period of time due to a serious knee injury. Rating: 7/10
Clement Lenglet: Lenglet was Villa’s only deadline day signing, as he joined on loan from Barcelona for the season. The injury blow suffered by Tyrone Mings on the opening weekend of the season left a hole in the Villa squad, and while Emery couldn’t directly replace the 30-year-old, Lenglet will help fill his void. The centre-back spent last season on loan at Tottenham and has experience of European football having made 50 Champions League appearances. Rating: 7/10

Cameron Archer: The striker returned to Bodymoor Heath earlier this summer on the back of another prolific loan spell in the Championship with Middlesbrough. After winning the European U21 Championship with England, he jetted out to the USA for the club’s Premier League Summer Series programme, and featured in all three friendlies Stateside. Despite a lack of strikers in Villa’s squad, Emery was happy for the 21-year-old to leave for Sheffield United in a deal worth £18.5million. Archer left Villa without scoring a Premier League goal or starting a match in the top-flight, so to get that sort of money for him was good business. Villa have also retained a degree of control over his future by inserting a buy-back clause. Rating: 8.5/10
Keinan Davis: Davis signed for Serie A side Udinese for £2million with add-ons. The 25-year-old only had 12 months left on his deal, and Villa also reportedly hold a sell-on clause. A good deal for Villa all things considered. Rating: 8./10
Marvelous Nakamba: Like Davis, Nakamaba was also heading into the final months of his contract before he left the club. Luton boss Rob Edwards was desperate to sign the midfielder after his successful loan spell at Kenilworth Road last season in the Championship. He was expected to leave the club this summer, and Luton got their man. Rating: 8/10
Aaron Ramsey: The midfielder was the first of the club’s academy graduates to sign a long-term contract outside of the organization this summer. Although he spent his whole tenure at Villa without making a single Premier League game, he departed for Burnley in a £14 million deal. Villa offers a buy-back option as well. Score: 9/10
Jaden Philogene: Although the 21-year-old showed promise throughout the preseason, Emery was unable to give him the playing time he requires at this point in his career. Philogene moved to Hull City for £5 million, but the Tigers could have signed the winger for a far lower cost given how much he has improved over the previous 18 months. It will be fascinating to watch Philogene adjust to life with Liam Rosenior. 7 out of 10
