Moyes ‘ready to quit’ West Ham in days as ‘big update’ increases exit ‘fears’ despite £35m ‘agreement’
According to reports, David Moyes is ‘ready to quit’ West Ham United before the new Premier League season starts this weekend.
The former Man Utd and Everton boss has done a great job since returning to West Ham in 2019 as he’s helped them return to Europe.
Moyes came under fire last season, though. The Hammers slumped into the bottom half but they avoided relegation by finishing on 40 points.
The Scotsman’s reputation was enhanced at the end of the season as he helped West Ham beat Fiorentina to lift the Europa Conference League.
But this summer has been difficult for West Ham. They have lost Declan Rice to Arsenal but they are yet to make a single summer signing.
It has been reported that Moyes has been butting heads with West Ham’s hierarchy as they have been a shambles during this summer’s transfer window.
Moyes is out of contract in 2024 and The Telegraph are reporting that his future ‘is in doubt’ despite West Ham ‘agreeing’ to sign Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez in a deal worth £35m.
West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan is ‘not thought to have any plans to sack Moyes, but fears remain he could leave the club should they start the season badly or he becomes the target of supporter dissatisfaction’.
Football Insider meanwhile claim to have a ‘big update’ on Moyes’ situation. They state the manager is ‘ready to quit’ ahead of West Ham’s first game of the 23/24 season against Bournemouth. The report adds.
‘The Scot’s future at the London Stadium has been an issue all summer, as first revealed by Football Insider, and had still to be completely resolved even in the wake of the club’s Europa Conference League success.
‘It has been exacerbated by the appointment of the new technical director Tim Steidten, with the pair at odds over transfer targets and how to spend the Declan Rice money.
‘Talks were held on Monday, with Moyes making clear to the West Ham hierarchy his misgivings about how much his influence will be reduced at West Ham this summer and going into the new season if he stays.
‘Chairman David Sullivan has claimed publicly and privately that Moyes will not be sacked and will be allowed to see out the final year of his contract at the club.
‘West Ham are now closing on the £30million-plus signing of defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez from Ajax. But relations remain frosty behind the scenes and sources say Moyes could even walk out ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth.’
